I Wayan Same
Born: September 22, 1970
"My art captures my heart and the mood of my surroundings- vibrant, beautiful, serene, and peaceful. It is important to me to display in my sculptures the pleasure, happiness, and peace that my family and I derive from our cultural and religious lives."
I Wayan Same has been greatly influenced artistically by his family and the religious role they have served locally for many generations. Wayan's family serves as the 'caretakers' of the main village temple, an honored role and responsibility, which has been passed down through many generations. Wayan's wish to pursue an apprenticeship and a career as an artisan was initially quite a surprise to his family, but they have always been greatly encouraging of his dream. He now has an impressive selected collection and recently has helped to open a locally based apprentice center for young aspiring Balinese artists.
Wayan is married and has two children. He lives closely to all of his extended family and is very active in his village's religious ceremonies and holidays.
